Comorbid Conditions

ADHD

This includes difficulty with concentration, attention, controlling behavior, and hyperactivity. While ADHD is not classified as a learning disability, 30-50% of children with ADHD also have learning disabilities, which can make learning more difficult.

Subtypes of ADHD:

1. Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive type (little inattention).
2. Predominantly inattentive type (minimal hyperactivity, sometimes referred to as ADD).
3. Combined type (both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity).

Characteristics of ADHD:

• Short attention span.
• Hyperactivity.
• Impulsiveness.
• Difficulty with time management.
• Frequent mood swings.
• Difficulty completing tasks.
• Easily distracted.
• Difficulty waiting for their turn.

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder involves antisocial behavior, trouble following rules, and difficulty empathizing with others. Children may engage in aggressive, disruptive, or deceptive behaviors, and have difficulty adhering to societal rules.

Symptoms

• Aggressive behavior: Bullying, cruelty, using weapons, coercion.
• Disruptive behavior: Arson, vandalism.
• Deceptive behavior: Lying, stealing, shoplifting, breaking into homes or cars.
• Violation of rules: Running away, skipping class, early sexual activity.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is an anxiety disorder characterized by repetitive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and compulsive behaviors.

Symptoms

• Fear of germs or dirt, leading to excessive handwashing.
• The need for precision and order in daily activities.
• Repetitive behaviors, such as excessive handwashing or cleaning.

Phobias

A phobia is an anxiety disorder marked by intense and irrational fear of specific objects or situations, lasting more than six months.

Common phobias include fear of spiders, snakes, and heights.
