Changing a child’s environment is a good option when they are not behaving appropriately. A child’s behavior often changes when the environment changes. By modifying the child’s surroundings, parents may be able to influence their behavior. Small changes in the environment can have a big impact.

Examples of Environmental Changes:
- Child’s play area
- Park
- Supermarket
- Home
- Toys
- Other children
- Distracting elements like noise, light, etc.
- Time of day
- Commands and requests from parents
- Proximity to certain individuals
How to Change the Environment
- Keep fragile or expensive items out of the child’s reach.
- Create a quiet place where the child can rest when tired.
- Avoid turning on the TV, computer, or other distractions during busy times, such as when preparing to leave for school in the morning.
- Find a safe place for outdoor play.
- When planning holidays or outings, choose a place that makes both you and your child happy.
- Play calming music in stressful situations.
- Allow children to put away toys they don’t want to share with others.

- Encourage calm and quiet activities before bedtime.
- Take your child shopping after their afternoon nap when they are more rested.
- Wake up a little earlier to avoid the rush when getting ready for school.
