Routines (Suitable for Ages 1-8)
Here are some tips for establishing a family routine:

- Plan time together as a family – for example, before and after work or school.
- Create a structured routine so that things run smoothly and everyone knows what to do.
- Set time limits for certain activities, such as phone, TV, and computer use, ensuring the entire family follows them. For example, you can make “watching TV for a certain amount of time” part of the routine.
- Explain routines to your child in simple terms. Be consistent. For example, say: “First, we brush our teeth, then we read a story.”
Ideas for Helping Kids Stick to Routines:

- Create a visual poster with pictures of the routine and place it where everyone can see it.
- Encourage your child to take responsibility for certain parts of the routine they can handle on their own, such as washing hands before meals.
- Encourage independence by having your child follow routines without parental help. For example, waking up on time, getting ready for school, or coming out of their room in the morning.
- Consider using a radio alarm clock in your child’s room to help them wake up on time.
- Adjust the routine based on your child’s age. For example, make sure the tasks are appropriate for what a preschooler can manage.
- Praise and acknowledge when your child follows the routine without assistance. Positive reinforcement helps build good habits.
