Time Out

Time out refers to a form of temporary isolation used as a consequence for unacceptable behavior. The goal is to remove the person from a rich and enjoyable environment to encourage a change in their behavior. This method is recommended by most pediatricians and developmental psychologists and is a widely recognized educational and parenting technique, especially in Western cultures.

Time outs are commonly used in settings like schools, colleges, offices, clinics, and homes. They typically last for 5 to 15 minutes, and research suggests that even shorter periods can be effective in encouraging behavior change.

A time out can take place in a designated chair, step, corner, bedroom, or any other location where there are no distractions such as interesting items, activities, or people. The key is to create an environment where the child is not receiving attention or stimulation.

Research has shown that time outs should last no longer than 15 minutes, although shorter periods are often sufficient for effective behavior modification.

  • Check the behavior and issue a warning.
Clearly inform your child that their behavior is unacceptable and that a time out will follow if it continues.
  • Explain why the time out is happening.
Make sure your child understands why they are being placed in time out. Use clear and simple language.
  • Have your child sit in time out.
Direct your child to the designated time out spot, ensuring that the environment is free from distractions.
  • End the time out.
Once the time out period is over, calmly tell your child that it is finished.
  • Praise the next good behavior.
After the time out, be sure to praise your child when they demonstrate positive behavior, reinforcing what you want to see more of.
